Flame Monitoring Equipment

A flame monitor, or flame detector detects and responds to the presence of flames and fire. As a result of the mechanisms a flame detector uses to detect the flame, it commonly is able to respond more rapidly and with more precision than a smoke or heat detector.

Ultraviolet (UV) detectors work by detecting the UV radiation emitted at the instant of ignition. Capable of detecting within 3-4 milliseconds, a 2-3 second time delay is often included to minimise false alarms. Infrared (IR) flame detectors monitor the infrared spectral band for specific patterns given off by hot gases, and usually respond within 3–5 seconds. UV/IR flame detectors are used in such applications as hydrogen stations, gas-fuelled cookers, industrial heating and drying systems, domestic heating systems and industrial gas turbines.
